Schema Therapy for Menopause
The peri-menopausal period is a time of immense psychological vulnerability AND opportunity.
Menopause is neuroendocrine transition that impacts not only your ovaries, but also your brain. In fact, the menopause transition (perimenopause) BEGINS in the brain. And just like in puberty, pregnancy and post-partum, these changes create a particularly ‘neuroplastic’ brain. On top of this, estrogen (known as the ‘hormone of accommodation’) begins to decline. Unsurprisingly, the menopausal transition sets the stage for significant psychological, cognitive, behavioural and physical upheaval.
Peri-menopause stands as a period of neurological, physiological, psychological, economic and social vulnerability and opportunity. The bio-psycho-social changes incumbent in this period can activate schemas whilst destabilising usual coping responses. However, this affords a unique opportunity to identify, resource and meet the individual’s needs. It is the meeting of needs at such crucial life junctures, that powerfully reshapes the person’s beliefs of self and the world, influencing their developmental trajectory beyond the menopausal years.
In essence, peri/menopause is particularly fertile ground for our schemas to be activated and for our modes to wreak increased havoc. On the upside, it is also a rich period in which the healthy adult and happy child are ‘wanting to be heard’ and actualised.
This webinar will cover;
A crash course in menopause – the stages, symptoms and the evidence-based (medical) treatment approach
The psychological themes of menopause – is it a psychological developmental stage in and of itself
Neuroscience and hormones – the bridge between biology and psychological processes
Schema therapy and menopause
Why it’s useful model when working with individuals during the menopausal years
Formulating the menopausal individual
The most commonly activated schemas
Harnessing these years to build healthy adult and happy child
You will receive a Zoom link and reminder emails closer to the webinar date.
